Samoth

Tomas Thormodsæter Haugen, mostly known as Samoth, is a Norwegian multi-instrumentist, composer and singer. He participated in projects mostly related to the black metal scene.

He is one of the founders of Emperor and Zyklon, and manages the label Nocturnal Art Productions.

Biography

Tomas Haugen was born in 1974. He started playing music when he met Ihsahn at the age of 13. He created along with him Thou Shalt Suffer in 1991, a black/death metal band where Tomas Haugen was playing guitars and took the pseudonym Samoth'.

The two young men then create Emperor, a band which is partly influenced by Euronymous (Mayhem) for the musical background. Samoth will handle the drums until Faust joins, then switching to guitars. Along with the growing success of Emperor, Samoth will join several other bands, including Satyricon, Gorgoroth, Zyklon-B, Ildjarn and Burzum.

Samoth was a great figure of the Inner Circle, under the influence of Euronymous. In March 1995 he was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail for churches arson (which he is suspected to have done along with Varg Vikernes).

When he got out of jail, Samoth went back in Emperor and continued his participation in various other projects. He created the band Zyklon in 1998 along with Trym, and decided (accordingly with Ihsahn) to put an end to Emperor in 2001 after "Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise" was released, due to different musical views.

In 2005 he joined a punk/black metal influenced band named Scum with Faust on drums.

He was first married to Andrea M. (Nebel) Haugen (with a celebration following "pagan" rites), with whom he had a daughter. After his divorce he got re-married a second time.
