Moonspell

Moonspell est un groupe portugais de Black Metal fondé en 1989, qui a évolué vers le Metal Gothique.

Biographie
Formé en 1989 sous le nom de Morbid God par Fernando Ribeiro, chanteur, Ares, bassiste et deux autres personnes, c'était alors un groupe de Black Metal. Le groupe se cherche musicalement, enregistre démos et EP, jusqu'en 1992 où ils décident de changer le nom du groupe en Moonspell. Ils continuent à expérimenter et, en 1993, enregistrent la démo Anno Satanae. En 1994, ils font la première partie de Cradle Of Filth à Lisbonne. Peu après, le groupe enregistre son premier album, Under the Moonspell, puis signe avec la maison de disque Century Media et sort Wolfheart.
C'est avec Irreligious qu'arrive le succès : le titre "Opium" est inclu dans diverses compilations et sa vidéo largement diffusée. Ce titre reste l'un des plus connu du groupe et le plus utilisé pour clore les concerts.
Au cours de la période 1998-2000 Moonspell s'oriente dans une veine plus expérimentale avec Sin/Pecado et surtout The Butterfly Effect. Avec cet album le groupe semble s'orienter dans l'avant-garde metal par sa nature extrêmement expérimentale et audacieuse. Mais cet album est mal reçu par les critiques. En parallèle, ils sortent en 98 un album de Black Metal sous le nom de Daemonarch (avec une reprise de "Call From The Grave" de Bathory) où Fernando se fait appeler Langsuyar et avec une boite à rythme à la place du batteur.
En 2003, le groupe reprend le titre jazz "I'll See You In My Dreams" pour la bande annonce d'un film d'horreur portugais. La même année ils sortent l'album, Antidote qui a été à l'origine du roman du même nom de l'écrivain José Luis Peixoto. En janvier 2005, Fernando Ribeiro publie un recueil de poèmes intitulé "Les Blessures Essentielles".
Après une tournée éclair en ouverture de Cradle Of Filth début 2005 le groupe se remet au travail. L'album Memorial est enregistré. N'ayant toujours pas de bassiste définitif, c'est Aires Pereira qui assure la basse sur ce nouvel opus. Sorti le 24 avril 2006 chez SPV c'est sans doute l'un des albums les plus "gothiques" de Moonspell. Le groupe a joué au Hellfest de 2007 à Clisson en France.
