Judas Priest est un groupe de Heavy Metal anglais formé en 1967 à Birmingham. Judas Priest est le fondateur du Heavy Metal moderne. Le nom du groupe provient de la chanson "The ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest" de Bob Dylan.

Biographie

Il s'agit, avec Black Sabbath, d'un des tout premiers groupes du genre, et encore aujourd'hui un des plus influents. Le premier album, "Rocka Rolla", comporte des bases Hard Rock et de fortes réminiscences de rock progressif, avec des morceaux longs et planants. Mais dès "Sad wings of destiny", le style se durcit considérablement, définissant alors les caractéristiques principales du Heavy Metal. Le succès de Judas Priest sera dès lors grandissant dans le monde entier.

Le groupe sera l'un des plus marquants des années 1980. Il propulsa à l'avant-plan le genre "Arena Metal", caractérisé par des performances hautes en pyrotechnie dans les diverses arènes de hockey des grandes villes du monde. Judas Priest mettra également au monde le look heavy metal biker, avec son habillement de cuir et ses bracelets à clous. Mais avant tout, c'est son style musical caractérisé par l'utilisation de deux guitaristes solistes (comme Thin Lizzy ou Iron Maiden), au service de compositions raffinées, et la qualité des performances scéniques (plusieurs albums live en attestent, notamment "Unleashed in the East") qui font de Judas Priest un des groupes de heavy metal les plus importants.

L'album "Turbo" voit un passage du côté du métal plus commercial avec l'utilisation de guitares-synthétiseurs (une première pour un groupe de heavy metal), alors que l'album "Painkiller" marque un retour vers un style beaucoup plus agressif, influencé par le Thrash Metal. Ce virage coïncide avec l'arrivée du batteur Scott Travis, adepte notoire de la double pédale et successeur des Lars Ulrich, Dave Lombardo et cie.

Le chanteur Rob Halford (surnommé "The Metal God" par les fans) quitte le groupe en 1991 pour mener une carrière solo, remplacé par Tim "Ripper" Owens à partir de l'album "Jugulator". Halford est depuis revenu au sein du groupe en juillet 2003. Après une participation remarquée au Ozzfest en 2003-2004, Judas Priest parcourt depuis le monde avec la tournée "Angel of Retribution", suivant la sortie de l'album du même nom.

À l'heure actuelle, Judas Priest est en pleine écriture d'un concept album se basant sur la vie et les prédictions de Nostradamus.
