Grave Digger ("Le Fossoyeur" en anglais) est un groupe de Heavy Metal allemand formé en 1980, le groupe était très influencé par des groupes comme Judas Priest surtout leurs compatriotes d'Accept.

Biographie

Le groupe est fort de plus de bientôt 30 ans d'existence, le groupe est formé par Chris Boltendahl, Peter Masson, Willi Lackmann et Albert Eckard à ses débuts. Leur premier album voit le jour en 1984 et se nomme "Heavy Metal Breakdown". L'année suivante sort "Witch Hunter", le groupe assurera à cette période les premières parties de Helloween ou encore Celtic Frost. S'ensuit plein de nouveaux albums où le groupe va tenter de mieux vendre sa musique et d'approcher le grand public, plutôt en vain. Grave Digger est un groupe qui n'a jamais eu de succès réel en plus de 25 ans de carrière, néanmoins le groupe a ses fans.

Le groupe s'est séparé en 1987 avant de se reformer en 1991 avec Chris Boltendahl, Uwe Lulis , Tomi Göttlich et Jörg Michael

En 1994 le groupe tourne dans toute l'allemagne et reçoit un succès certain, le groupe assura aussi la première partie de Manowar durant cette tournée 94-95.

En 1996 Stefan Arnold devient le nouveau batteur de Grave Digger. Cette année là le groupe sort "Tunes of War" qui traite de l'histoire de l'Ecosse et de William Wallace, cet album est le premier d'une trilogie médiévale avec "Knights of the Cross" en 1997 et "Excalibur" surement le meilleur album du groupe en 1999 qui acheva cette trilogie. Grave Digger Part en tournée Mondiale, avec Hans Peter Katzenburg au clavier dorénavant.

En 2002 le groupe participe au Wacken Open Air en Allemagne et enregistrera un DVD de ce concert. S'ensuivirent deux autres albums "Rheingold" en 2003 puis "The last Supper".

En 2005 Grave Digger sort un second DVD qui fête les 25 ans du groupe.

En 2007 "Liberty or death" sort mais n'est pas très bien reçu par les fans.

Le leader Chris Boltendahl a déclaré ne pas vouloir raccrocher et continuer l'aventure Grave Digger.
